Throughout history, writing enabled societies to record administration, trade, law, religion, and historical events. From the earliest symbolic systems of Neolithic Europe (c. 5300–4000 BCE) to the knotted records of the Inca Empire (c. 1400–1532), civilizations developed diverse ways of preserving information. Many ancient scripts have been deciphered, including Mesopotamian cuneiform during the 19th century, Egyptian hieroglyphs in 1822, and Linear B in 1952, revealing thousands of years of political, economic, and cultural history that had previously been inaccessible.

The undeciphered scripts featured here represent some of the largest remaining gaps in our knowledge of the ancient world. Their decipherment could identify unknown languages, reconstruct political institutions, clarify trade networks, reveal religious beliefs, and provide firsthand historical records from civilizations known today largely through archaeology. Together, they offer the possibility of transforming our understanding of how societies developed across Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas.
