The so-called North Sea Empire refers to the personal union created by Cnut the Great (reign in England 1016–1035; Denmark 1018–1035; Norway 1028–1035), which linked the kingdoms of England, Denmark, and Norway under a single ruler during the early 11th century. Cnut, the son of Sweyn Forkbeard (reign in England 1013–1014) and grandson of Harald Bluetooth (reign c. 958–c. 986), emerged from the wider context of Viking expansion and dynastic competition across northern Europe. Following years of campaigning during the later Anglo-Saxon period, Cnut secured the English throne in 1016 after the death of Edmund Ironside (reign 1016). From England, his most prosperous and administratively developed kingdom, he governed a maritime network of territories connected through trade routes, dynastic alliances, and military authority across the North Sea region.

During his reign, Cnut consolidated power through cooperation with the English aristocracy, patronage of the Church, and the maintenance of royal law codes that reinforced stability across his realms. His influence extended beyond his core kingdoms: rulers in regions such as Scotland and parts of the Baltic world acknowledged his authority or sought alliance, reflecting the geopolitical reach of the North Sea political system in the early medieval period. After his death at 40 from an unknown illness (both his sons died without leaving heirs in just a few years,) a period of messy political instability disintegrated Cnut’s North Sea Empire and, in 1066, made England a target for another foreign appetite - this time from Normandy across the English Channel
