The French Revolution (1789–1799) was a decade of political and social upheaval that dismantled France's Ancien Régime and transformed ideas about sovereignty, citizenship, rights, and political authority. A severe fiscal crisis, unequal taxation, social tensions, Enlightenment political ideas, and conflict over royal reform led Louis XVI to summon the Estates-General in May 1789. The formation of the National Assembly, the storming of the Bastille, the Great Fear, and the abolition of feudal privileges rapidly shifted sovereignty away from the monarchy. Attempts to establish a constitutional monarchy were weakened by the king's Flight to Varennes in 1791 and growing political polarization. War against Austria and Prussia from 1792 accelerated this radicalization: the monarchy was overthrown, the French Republic established, and Louis XVI executed in January 1793.

The Revolution then developed through interconnected domestic and international crises. Foreign invasion, the War in the Vendée, Federalist revolts, economic instability, and factional struggles contributed to emergency government and the Reign of Terror in 1793–94. Manwhile, French armies moved from defending the Revolution to expanding French influence across the Low Countries, the Rhineland, Switzerland, and Italy, creating annexed territories and French-backed sister republics. The decade ended with Napoleon Bonaparte's coup of 18 Brumaire on 9 November 1799, replacing the Directory with the Consulate and linking the revolutionary era directly to the rise of Napoleonic rule.
