Amphibious Assault, Iwo Jima
The amphibious assault of Iwo Jima by US Marines, aerial photograph, February 1945.
The island's dominant geographical feature, Mount Suribachi, can be seen looming above the invasion beaches. The Battle of Iwo Jima, won by the US but with high casualties, was part of WWII's Pacific War against Japan (1941-45).
