A November 1943 photograph showing a wrecked Japanese seaplane and US forces on the beach at Makin Atoll, part of the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati). The battle of Makin was part of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands Campaign (November 1943 - February 1944) in the Pacific War of WWII (1939-45).
