A 1942 photograph of Colonel Leslie R. Groves (later promoted to Lieutenant General), a military engineer who was put in overall charge of the secret Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb during WWII. On the right is the physicist Robert Oppenheimer (1904-67), who was chosen to head the international team of scientists on the project.
