Andrew H. Foote was born on 02 September 1806 in Connecticut, and he joined the US Navy in 1822, quickly rising through the ranks.
He was a Union flag officer during the American Civil War who became widely known following his naval victory over Confederate opposition at the Battle of Fort Henry in February 1862. He continued to play a prominent role in the war, notably during the Battle of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Island Number Ten.
Foote died from Bright's disease (kidney disease) on 26 June 1863 at the Astor Hotel in New York City.
