The Middle Kingdom of Egypt (c. 2050–1650 BCE) was a period of political reunification, renewed royal authority, and cultural achievement following the fragmentation of the First Intermediate Period. Beginning with the reunification of Upper and Lower Egypt under Mentuhotep II of the 11th Dynasty, the kingdom developed a more centralized administration under the 12th Dynasty, with its royal capital at Itjtawy. Agricultural development, monumental construction, and advances in literature and art marked a revival of Egyptian state power.

Egypt expanded its control southward into Lower Nubia, establishing fortified frontiers to secure trade routes, resources, and strategic access along the Nile, while the independent Kingdom of Kush developed around Kerma farther south. Commercial and diplomatic connections linked Egypt with the Levant, Sinai, and Red Sea, including expeditions to Punt. These networks strengthened the Egyptian economy and royal authority while connecting the Nile Valley to the wider Bronze Age world. The subsequent weakening of centralized power contributed to the political divisions of the Second Intermediate Period.
