The House of Hanover was the royal dynasty that ruled Great Britain and later the United Kingdom from 1714 to 1901. Its accession resulted from the Act of Settlement (1701), which restricted succession to Protestant heirs and ultimately brought George I (reign 1714–1727), Elector of Hanover and a descendant of James I, to the British throne. George I and his successors ruled within an increasingly parliamentary political system in which ministers, Parliament, and cabinet government assumed growing importance. Britain and Hanover remained joined through their monarch until 1837, when Queen Victoria inherited the British crown while Hanover passed to her uncle Ernest Augustus under its different succession laws.
The six Hanoverian monarchs reigned during Britain's transformation into an industrial, commercial, and imperial power. Their period encompassed the Jacobite challenges, the Seven Years' War, the American Revolution, the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Industrial Revolution, abolition of the slave trade and slavery, expanding parliamentary representation, and the rapid growth of the British Empire. Under Victoria (reign 1837–1901), industrialization, urbanization, political reform, and imperial expansion helped make Britain the foremost global power of the nineteenth century. Her death in 1901 ended the Hanoverian line on the British throne, which passed through her husband Prince Albert to their son Edward VII of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
