European colonization in North America developed gradually between the late 15th century and the mid-18th century, beginning with maritime exploration and expanding into claims, settlements, missions, forts, and trading networks. Spanish colonization took root in the south and southwest through towns, missions, and presidios; France built a vast but thinly settled sphere centered on the St. Lawrence River, the Great Lakes, and the Mississippi Valley; and Britain established increasingly populous colonies along the Atlantic seaboard. Smaller Dutch and Swedish footholds also played an important role in the early colonial period.
This process was shaped not only by European rivalry but also by the continued power of Indigenous nations and confederacies, whose territories and alliances strongly influenced colonial expansion. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) marked an important turning point by transferring Newfoundland, Hudson Bay, and Acadia from France to Britain, strengthening British influence in northeastern North America. By 1750, competing imperial ambitions, overlapping territorial claims, and unresolved frontier tensions had created the conditions that would soon erupt into the French and Indian War, a major conflict that reshaped the future of the continent.
