Between c. 1650 and 1730, the Caribbean formed the maritime heart of Spain’s American empire and one of the principal arenas of European imperial rivalry. The New Spain and Tierra Firme fleets carried American silver, commodities, and Asian goods through Veracruz, Cartagena, Portobelo, and Havana before crossing the Atlantic to Spain. This convoy system concentrated enormous wealth along predictable maritime corridors, while English Jamaica (from 1655), Dutch Curaçao, and expanding French settlements in western Hispaniola increasingly challenged Spain’s attempts to control Caribbean trade.
These rival footholds also supported buccaneers, privateers, and pirates, whose activities shifted considerably across the period. Tortuga, Port Royal, Petit-Goâve, and Île-à-Vache were prominent during the 17th-century buccaneer era, when raiders frequently operated with colonial letters of marque against Spanish shipping and settlements. After the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), declining privateering employment helped fuel a more independent wave of piracy centred increasingly on places such as Nassau. The result was a maritime frontier where imperial warfare, commerce, smuggling, privateering, and piracy repeatedly overlapped.
