Simon Bolivar Buckner, photograph by an unknown photographer, 1860 - 1870.

Simon Bolivar Buckner served in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and later as a Confederate general in the American Civil War. He notably took responsibility for the Confederate surrender at the Battle of Fort Donelson in 1862, subsequently becoming a prisoner of war until his release in a prisoner exchange, after which he continued to play a role in the war.

At the end of the war, Buckner was one of the last Confederate generals to surrender, and he did so in June 1865, later going on to serve as Governor of Kentucky from 1887 to 1891. Simon Bolivar Buckner died on 08 January 1914.
