Buddhism originated in the Ganges Plain of Magadha (modern Bihar, India) during the 5th–4th centuries BCE, following the enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha (c. 5th century BCE). Initially transmitted through oral teaching and monastic communities, it expanded beyond its Indian heartland through trade networks, missionary activity, and royal patronage. A decisive turning point came under Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire (reign c. 268–232 BCE), whose support transformed Buddhism into a transregional faith. From this period, it reached Sri Lanka (3rd century BCE) and extended into Central Asia along the overland trade routes later known collectively as the Silk Road.

By the 1st century CE, Buddhism had reached China, where it was adapted through translation, interaction with Confucian and Daoist traditions, and the growth of monastic institutions. From China, it was introduced to Korea (4th century CE) and Japan (6th century CE), while new doctrinal traditions emerged across Asia. Mahayana Buddhism emphasized the universal potential for enlightenment, whereas Vajrayana Buddhism, characterized by esoteric teachings and ritual practices, developed in the Himalayan world before expanding into Tibet, Mongolia, and neighboring regions by the 8th century CE. Through these regional adaptations, Buddhism evolved into one of the world's most influential and diverse religious traditions.
