This map illustrates the rapid military conquests and territorial expansion of the Mongol Empire under the leadership of Genghis Khan (circa 1162 to 1227, reign 1206 to 1227), from the empire's founding in 1206 until his death in 1227. Rising from the steppes of Mongolia, Genghis Khan forged a vast empire through brilliant military strategy, unification of rival tribes, and relentless campaigns that transformed the political landscape of Eurasia.
By the time of his death, the Mongol Empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the fringes of Eastern Europe, covering more than 11 million square miles (close to 30 million square kilometers)—an area comparable in size to the African continent. The Mongol cavalry, famed for its speed and coordination, enabled rapid conquests and secured communication routes across vast distances. The resulting Pax Mongolica fostered long-distance trade and diplomatic contact, with messages traveling between cities like Tabriz and Beijing in under a month. Though Genghis Khan did not live to see the full extent of the empire’s reach, his descendants carried his legacy forward, establishing enduring khanates such as the Yuan Dynasty in China, the Chagatai Khanate in Central Asia, the Golden Horde in the western steppes, and the Ilkhanate in Persia.
