Valerian (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Valerian (r. 253-260 CE) was more popular then Aemilian and had a larger army, thereby allowing him to seize the title of Roman emperor. He divided the Roman Empire between himself and his son Gallienus (r. 253-268 CE) so that each could focus on the eastern and western half, respectively. While campaigning against the Sassanian Empire in the east, Valerian was captured by king Shapur I (r. c. 240-270 CE) and died in captivity.
Pictured alongside the reconstruction is a bust of Valerian from the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.
