The Church of Cristo de la Luz is one of the few monuments in Toledo where the city’s various historical phases can be observed. The earliest remains date from the Roman period and include a stone quarry and a paved street dating to the 1st century CE. During the Islamic period, in the 10th century CE, a mosque known as Bab al-Mardum was constructed on the site. Following the Christian conquest of Toledo by Alfonso VI in 1085 CE, the mosque was converted into a church. During the 12th century CE, the building was expanded with the addition of a transept and an apse, as well as a small cemetery. Today, the former church has been deconsecrated and functions as a historic monument and a site open to visitors.
