The dynastic history of China traditionally extends from the semi-legendary Xia dynasty (traditionally c. 2070–1600 BCE) through the Shang (c. 1600–1046 BCE) and Zhou dynasty (c. 1046–256 BCE), during which the Mandate of Heaven developed as an influential principle of political legitimacy. Imperial China began with the Qin unification (221 BCE), when Qin Shi Huang (reign 221–210 BCE) established centralized rule over the former Warring States. The Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) consolidated and adapted these institutions, while later periods alternated between political fragmentation and reunification. Across these transformations, imperial government developed through changing combinations of centralized administration, bureaucratic institutions, Confucian political thought, taxation, and control of agricultural and commercial resources.
China's imperial history was also shaped by conquest, migration, and interaction with neighboring peoples rather than by an uninterrupted succession of unified Han-ruled dynasties. The Mongol-led Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), founded by Kublai Khan (reign as Great Khan 1260–1294; Yuan emperor 1271–1294), incorporated China into a wider Eurasian imperial system, while the Manchu Qing dynasty (1644–1912) expanded imperial power under rulers including Kangxi (reign 1661–1722) and Qianlong (reign 1735–1796). During the 19th century, fiscal pressures, major rebellions, foreign intervention, and institutional challenges weakened Qing authority. The abdication of the Xuantong Emperor, Puyi (reign 1908–1912), ended imperial rule in 1912, concluding more than two millennia in which Chinese states repeatedly redefined political legitimacy, territorial authority, and imperial governance.
