Gordian I (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Gordian I (r. 238 CE) was appointed emperor by the Roman Senate in an attempt to replace Maximinus Thrax. The 80-year-old Gordian I and his son Gordian II unsuccessfully fought the forces of Maximinus in a civil war and ruled less than a month before their deaths. Gordian and his sons are referred to as the Gordian emperors.
Pictured alongside the reconstruction are the portraits used as references, including the Capitoline bust of Gordian I and several coins.
