The geographical worldview of Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) reflected a combination of classical geography, medieval cosmography, and European knowledge of Asia in the late 15th century. Influenced by scholars such as Pierre d'Ailly and geographical ideas associated with Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli, as well as Marco Polo's descriptions of the East, Columbus believed that Asia extended much farther eastward than it actually did. Although the Earth's spherical shape was well established among educated Europeans, Columbus underestimated its circumference and calculated that Cipangu (Japan) lay approximately 2,400 nautical miles (4,500 km) west of the Canary Islands, compared with the actual distance of about 10,600 nautical miles (19,600 km).
Sponsored by Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, Columbus's expedition reached the Caribbean on 12 October 1492 rather than Asia, which he continued to believe was nearby. The encounter initiated sustained transatlantic contact and accelerated European maritime expansion, conquest, and colonization in the Americas. These developments transformed global trade, political power, and cultural exchange while bringing profound consequences for Indigenous populations. Columbus's geographical miscalculations illustrate how inherited knowledge, commercial ambition, and imperfect interpretations of the world helped shape the beginnings of early modern globalization.
