Map of William the Conqueror's March on London 1066 — This map illustrates the campaign of William, Duke of Normandy, during his 1066 invasion of England—a decisive military and political effort that reshaped British history. William claimed the English crown had been promised to him by Edward the Confessor (reigned 1042–1066) and set out to assert that claim following Edward’s death and the accession of Harold Godwinson.

Delayed by poor weather, William’s army landed on the Sussex coast in late September 1066. On 14 October, he met Harold’s forces at the Battle of Hastings, where Harold was killed and the Anglo-Saxon army was routed. William then marched through Kent, laying waste to resistant areas and using a combination of force and diplomacy to weaken opposition. Despite initial resistance around London, a shift in tactics and the arrival of reinforcements allowed William to encircle the city. By late October, he had secured the capital and was acknowledged as king. On Christmas Day 1066, William was crowned King of England (reigned 1066–1087) in Westminster Abbey, marking the beginning of Norman rule and a profound transformation of English governance, language, and society.
