Millard Fillmore, American Candidate for President of the United States, woodcut proof for a campaign banner by Baker & Godwin, c. 1856.

Millard Fillmore was the thirteenth president of the United States, serving from July 1850 to March 1853. The campaign banner here originates from after Fillmore's presidency, advertising him as the Native American Party's 1856 presidential candidate, which was ultimately an unsuccessful campaign. Fillmore is illustrated with figures on either side symbolising justice and liberty, likely values that the campaign would have aimed to promote. Also shown is a document titled "The Union," which ties in with Fillmore's desire at the time to preserve the Union and his stance as a Unionist during the American Civil War.
