Five course guitar by Matteo Sellas, Venice, Italy c. 1630 to c. 1650.
The five course guitar featured five double courses of gut strings, and often a decorative rose placed in the sound hole as well as a vaulted back. The guitar here was made by luthier Matteo Sellas with engraved bone and snakewood details and the style was popular during the 17th century, or early Baroque period, in Italy, Spain and Southern France.
