Kim Il-Sung, during Korean elections, photograph by unknown photographer, circa 1946.
Shown here is Kim Il-Sung, who would go on to become the first leader of North Korea from 1949 until his death in 1994. In the background you can see the flag of the People’s Republic of Korea, which was used before Korea became divided.
Kim Il-Sung first earned notoriety opposing Japanese imperialism within Korea and instead promoting Marxism-Leninism. Following WWII he later pursued his goals of reunifying North and South Korea, leading to the start of the Korean War, and over his career, ultimately cemented the rule of North Korea’s Communist Party, which is the sole controller of the state to this day.
