This illustration, depicting the downhill ride of Colonel Frederick W. Lander of the Union army during the Battle of Philippi (Philippi Races) on 3 June 1861, was published in the periodical Leslie's Weekly (also known as Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper). The image became the most famous depiction of the battle after it was published in 1861.
