A photograph of the ruined tomb of Muhammad Ahmad (1844-1885) in Omdurman, Sudan. The self-proclaimed Mahdi's tomb was destroyed by the British after the Battle of Omdurman on 2 September 1898 during the Mahdist War (1881-99). The tomb originally had a large dome. The structure has been restored since this photograph was taken in the early 20th century.
