This painting depicts the wedding of Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse on the 9th of June, 1660. The union of France and Spain signaled a peaceful future between two powerful states in Europe. The marriage was negotiated by Cardinal Mazarin and the Queen Mother of France, Anne of Austria, to further cement France's dominace in the continent and secure Louis' rule.
