Indian Ocean trade in the 15th and 16th centuries connected East Africa, Arabia, Persia, India, Southeast Asia, and China through an extensive maritime network shaped by seasonal monsoon winds. Arab, Persian, Indian, Swahili, Malay, and Chinese merchants exchanged spices, textiles, porcelain, metals, ivory, and other commodities through major ports such as Aden, Hormuz, Calicut, and Malacca. These routes also fostered cultural and religious exchange, while Zheng He's Ming voyages (1405–1433) demonstrated China's maritime and diplomatic reach.

European maritime expansion transformed, but did not replace, this established trading system. Following Vasco da Gama's arrival in India in 1498, the Portuguese established fortified trading bases and seized strategic ports, including Goa (1510), Malacca (1511), and Hormuz (1515), seeking control of the lucrative spice trade. Ottoman control of Egypt from 1517 strengthened its involvement in Red Sea commerce, while African and Asian merchants maintained extensive networks. By the late 16th century, Dutch expeditions and Spanish Pacific connections further extended global trade and intensified competition across the region.
