The War of 1812 (1812–1815) was a transatlantic conflict between the United States and Great Britain that grew out of unresolved tensions from the Napoleonic Wars. Under President James Madison (in office 1809–1817) and during the reign of King George III (reign 1760–1820), the United States protested British maritime practices, including trade restrictions and the impressment of American sailors, while also seeking to expand westward into Indigenous lands. For Britain, the war was a secondary theater within a global struggle against Napoleonic France, but in North America it became a contest over sovereignty, borders, and influence.
Fighting unfolded along several fronts: the U-Canada border, the Great Lakes, the Atlantic coast, and the western frontier. Native American nations, led most prominently by Tecumseh (died 1813), allied with Britain in an effort to halt US expansion and preserve territorial autonomy, an objective ultimately left unfulfilled. Major episodes included the burning of York (Toronto), the British capture and burning of Washington, D.C. (1814), and the failed assault on Baltimore, which inspired The Star-Spangled Banner. The war formally ended with the Treaty of Ghent (24 December 1814), restoring pre-war boundaries without settling the core disputes. Despite its inconclusive terms, the conflict weakened Indigenous resistance in the Old Northwest, secured US control of its northern frontier, and strengthened American national identity, while confirming British Canada’s survival as a distinct political entity.
