A posthumous painting of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster (1340 - 1399 CE). John of Gaunt founded the House of Lancaster, and was a close friend of the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer (1343 - 1400 CE).
Originally erroneously attributed to Lucas Cornelisz de Kock (1495 - 1552 CE), this painting was commissioned by Sir Edward Hoby (1560 - 1617 CE) for Queenborough Castle, Kent. The painting is now in the possession of the Duke of Beaufort at Badminton House, Gloucestershire, UK.
