Tsar Nicholas II Under House Arrest
A 1917 photograph of ex-Tsar Nicholas II (reign 1894-1917) while under house arrest on the orders of the Bolshevik government. Nicholas here wears his military uniform, but his decision to appoint himself commander-in-chief of the Russian armed forces during the First World War (1914-18) proved disastrous and was one of the main reasons he was obliged to abdicate.
