How did the Viking chieftains who settled in Iceland get rich in early medieval times? Iceland was a peculiar polity since it did not really have "classical" institutions or social classes, nevertheless some chieftains did have access to particular sources of wealth, albeit much less than on the continent. The economic conditions did not help much either, and among the few possibilities for the establishment of an elite there was the church and its upcoming tax.
