Ninevite V Incised Cup Download Full Size Image

This pottery cup has a pointed-base and was wheel-made. The surface contains many incised markings typical of Ninevite 5 incised ware. Donated by Hormuzd Rassam. Ninevite 5 period, 2750-2500 BCE. From Nineveh, northern Mesopotamia, modern-day Iraq. (The British Museum, London).

The period's name, Ninevite 5, came after the 5th level in a deep excavation trench at Nineveh, Northern Mesopotamia, where it belonged to a distinctive culture. This was partly contemporary with the Early Dynastic Period in the south. Ceramic vessels were decorated with either painted or incised designs.
