Front page of the Charelston Mercury newspaper covering news in December 1860 that South Carolina had voted to secede from the United States of America. This action would trigger the Secession Crisis of 1860-61 which would, in turn, lead to the formation of the Confederate States of America and, ultimately, to the American Civil War (1861-65).
