The inscription reads: “*ERA MCCIX. M. GUALDINUS NOBILI QUIDEM GENERE BRACHARENSIS ORIUNDUS EDIFICAVIT HUNC CASTRUM DE ALMOUROL CUM FRATRIBUS SUIS*” (In 1209, (corresponds to 1171 CE) Master Gauldim (Pais), a nobleman from Braga, built this Castle of Almourol with his brethren, the freiars.).
