Photograph of Admiral Yamamoto, commander of Japan's Combined Fleet during the Second World War, reviewing war plans. His reservations about attacking the United States are well known, famously having said Japan would awaken a "sleeping giant" if war broke out. He felt the only course of action was to plan a sneak attack on the US Navy in the Pacific and force the Americans to the negotiating table.
