A reformer, Sultan Mahmud II implemented numerous changes to the Ottoman state, which among many included the disbandment of the Janissary Corps. His reign saw territorial losses for the Ottoman Empire, but also laid the foundations for the Tanzimat era of reforms that succeded him.
