The Death of General Wolfe at Quebec (September, 1759), mezzotint published by Robert Sayer and John Bennett after Edward Penny, 10 October 1779.
On 13 September 1759, British forces under Major-General James Wolfe and French troops under Lieutenant-General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm met for battle on the promontory before the walls of Québec City. The Battle of the Plains of Abraham would be a victory for Wolfe, and a decisive one for the British Empire in the Seven Years' War, although he would not live to see it, falling to gunshot wounds as the fighting culminated, as would his opponent, Montcalm, the next day.
