Saitobaru kofun landscape, photograph by Jan van der Crabben, Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, September 2025.
A plethora of keyhole-shaped burial mounds called kofun were constructed between 300-600 CE. Unlike most other kofun sites in Japan, the Miyazaki Plain's landscape looks much the same as it did during the Kofun Period, as it is a protected area without any modern buildings surrounding it.
