A map of the Battle of Gettysburg (1–3 July 1863), the largest and bloodiest engagement of the American Civil War (1861–1865), fought in Pennsylvania between General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and General George G. Meade’s Union Army of the Potomac. Following his victory at Chancellorsville, Robert E. Lee invaded the North hoping to secure a decisive victory that would force peace negotiations, bolster Confederate morale, and potentially influence foreign recognition. The battle unfolded over three intense days of combat, from initial cavalry clashes west of the town to full-scale assaults on Union defensive lines positioned along Cemetery Ridge, Culp’s Hill, and Little Round Top.
The Confederate army suffered massive losses during Pickett’s Charge on July 3, marking the turning point of the Civil War. Lee’s retreat to Virginia ended his northern campaign and shifted the strategic initiative to the Union. Gettysburg, combined with the fall of Vicksburg the following day, represented a critical dual blow to the Confederacy. The staggering human cost, more than 50,000 killed, wounded, or missing, transformed Gettysburg into a symbol of sacrifice and national purpose. In November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address redefined the war’s meaning, framing it as a struggle for equality, liberty, and the enduring survival of democracy.
