In early Greek cosmology, the Twelve Elder Titans were the children of the primordial deities Gaia (Earth) and Ouranos (Sky), representing an older divine order that preceded the Olympian gods. As part of the pre-Olympian generation, the Titans embodied elemental forces, celestial cycles, and aspects of the natural world that shaped the earliest mythical understanding of the cosmos. Their stories reflect a universe defined by succession, conflict, and transformation, patterns central to how the ancient Greeks conceptualized divine authority, cosmic balance, and human destiny.

Although several early Greek traditions explored the origins of the cosmos, the most influential account survives in Hesiod’s Theogony (composed c. 8th century BCE). This poem offers the earliest complete genealogy of the gods, describing the emergence of the universe from primordial chaos, the rise and fall of the Titans under Kronos, and the eventual victory of Zeus (reign over gods established after the Titanomachy). Hesiod’s narrative became the dominant framework for later Greek religion and literature, shaping how generations understood the transition from the ancient Titan order to the Olympian pantheon. Through this lens, the Titans stand not merely as characters, but as symbols of an earlier cosmic age whose legacy informs the structure of the mythological world.
