An 1873 oil on canvas portrait, Le Bon Bok ('The Beer Drinker') by Edouard Manet (1832-83), the French modernist painter. This vibrant portrait, inspired by the work of the 17th-century Dutch painter Frans Hals, was accepted by the 1873 Paris Salon and met with wide acclaim. (Philadelphia Museum of Art, U.S.A)
