An 1880 oil on canvas still life, Bunch of Asparagus, by Edouard Manet (1832-83), the French modernist painter. Manet was particularly interested in still life, especially towards the end of his career. The work was bought by the editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Charles Ephrussi. The original price was 800 francs, but Ephrussi was so delighted with the painting that he gave Manet 1,000. In response to this generosity, Manet painted his client an additional small canvas of a single asparagus. (Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, Germany)
