Bronze cast (1899 CE) after the original full-size statue (1883-1886 CE) by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Although the figure began as an individual portrait of Deacon Samuel Chapin (1595–1675 CE), a prominent early settler of Springfield, it developed into a representation of an ideal, the Puritan dogma.
