Henry V Statue
Henry V of England (r. 1413-1422) spent much of his reign fighting the Hundred Years’ War against France. He won a great victory at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, which led to the Treaty of Troyes (1420), naming Henry heir to the French throne. However, his unexpected death in 1422 meant he would never wear the crown of France.
The statue of Henry V was designed by local artist John Blakely in 1990 to look like English actor Laurence Olivier, who played the king in the 1944 movie Henry V, based on Shakespeare’s play The Life of Henry the Fifth. The statue stands on a roundabout near Stratford-upon-Avon, West Midlands, Shakespeare’s birthplace. Henry is portrayed as a warrior in full armour, with his sword raised aloft in victory.
