Hilda of Whitby (614-680) was born as a Northumbrian princess and baptized as a Christian at a young age. Despite being raised as a Roman Catholic in the Northumbrian court, Hilda would convert to CelticChristianity and she would play a pivotal role in spreading this sect of Christianity. Hilda established the monastery at Whitby and as the founding abbess, she fostered scholarship and promoted the monastery. She also attempted to reconcile the differences between the Celtic and Roman Christian traditions.
