Q: What is the Quran mainly about?

The Quran for Muslims is the sacred word of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammed by the archangel Gabriel in the Arabic language. It contains poetic verses that lay out and explain the foundations of the faith of Islam including - monotheism, righteous conduct, regular prayer, charity, the afterlife, social mores, marriage and family.

Q: Why is the Quran different from the Bible?

The Quran, as well as the faith of Islam, does not differentiate itself from the Bible or Christianity. Rather it is understood as the final message of God in the Abrahamic tradition that encompasses the Torah and Judaism, the Bible and Christianity. The Quran makes reference to the Bible as a previous message sent to humankind and it depicts Jesus as a previous prophet.

Q: Does the Quran mention Jesus?

Jesus is mentioned throughout the Quran by his Arabic name Isa. He is depicted as one of the major prophets entrusted with God’s message in the form of a revelation, as well as the spirit and word of God. His birth to Mary is seen as miraculous and his miracles and preaching are recounted in stories. The Quran has an entire sura (chapter) devoted to Mary and the miraculous birth of Jesus.

The message of the Quran was initially spread orally by recitation. Around the year 650, approximately 18 years after the death of the Prophet, the verses of the Quran were collected, written down and assembled into the current form of the book by the third Muslim Caliph Uthman ibn Affan.
