  • c. 550 BCE
    Oldest surviving sculpture of a winged Nike found on Delos.

    Greeks fighting Amazons becomes a popular subject of architectural sculpture across Greece.

    The bronze Poseidon or Zeus statue (of Cape Artemesium) is sculpted.

    Two bronze Greek warriors are sculpted, the 'Bronzi Riace'.

    The bronze statue of the discus thrower (Diskobolos) by Myron is sculpted.

    The cult statue of Athena Parthenos is dedicated in the Parthenon of Athens.

    Kresilas sculpts the idealised portrait statue of Pericles which in antiquity was much copied as a bust.

    The Nike of Paionios is erected at Olympia to commemorate the Messenian and Naupaktian victory over Sparta at the battle of Sphakteria.
  • 340 BCE
    Praxiteles sculpts his Aphrodite, the first full female nude in Greek sculpture.

    Statue of Hermes sculpted by Praxiteles.
  • 8 Sep 1504 CE
    Michelangelo's masterpiece *David* is unveiled at the Palazzo della Signoria, Florence, Italy. The statue stands 17 feet (5.17 m) tall and was sculpted from Carrara marble. It is among the most recognizable and most often copied works of art in the world.
  • 8 Apr 1820 CE
    The famous statue Venus de Milo is discovered on the island of Milos by the Greek farmer Yorgos Kentrotas. It was found in pieces, restored, and acquired by French authorities who placed it in the Louvre Museum, where it remains today.
  • 28 Jul 1866 CE
    18-year-old artist and sculptress Vinnie Ream is awarded the commission for the full-size statue of Abraham Lincoln by the US Congress for placement in the US Capitol.
  • 16 Aug 1880 CE
    The French Directorate of Fine Arts commissions sculptor Auguste Rodin to create a set of bronze doors for the scheduled construction of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, and requested images taken from Dante's *Divine Comedy*. The museum was never built but the commission resulted in Rodin's masterpiece *The Gates of Hell*.
  • 15 Feb 1998 CE
    The Angel of the North, a steel sculpture of a figure with outstretched wings, is installed in Gateshead, England on a hill overlooking the A1 and A167 routes. The statue stands 66 feet (20 meters) tall and has a wingspan of 177 feet (54 meters), making it the largest sculpture in Britain.
