  The city of Tel Aviv is founded when 66 Jewish families gather on the vacant dunes outside Jaffa to establish plots of land for a new community.
• 22 Sep 1979
  The Vela Incident occurs in the Indian Ocean near the South African Prince Edward Islands when a bright double flash is detected by the American Vela Hotel satellite, designed to monitor for nuclear detonations around the world. The light flash was interpreted as a nuclear explosion and is thought to have been caused by an undeclared test of a nuclear weapon by Israel with support from South Africa.
