The home of Roman civic and social life, the Roman Forum lay in the very heart of Roman cultural topography. Nestled amidst the greatest monuments of Rome - the Colosseum, the Palatine Hill, the Capitoline complex and the Circus Maximus - the forum itself was home to some of the most fascinating monuments of Roman religion and history: the Temple of Divine Caesar, which you can see in the distance, and the centre of the first of the Imperial cults. This viewpoint positions you at the base of the Basilica Aemilia, which was constructed under the patronage of Lucius Aemilius Lepidus Paullus in the last quarter of the 2nd century BCE. Basilicas were used for political meetings and commerce in this period; only much later did the word ‘basilica’ become attached to Christian architecture. Along the roof of this building were colossal statues of Parthian prisoners. Around you, you can see the tall columns that supported statues of notable Romans from history, as well as the complex of buildings that rises up behind the arch of Constantine: the Capitoline Hill. Take note of the many commemorative arches, statues and monuments crowding this place, as well as the two speaking platforms at either side of the forum, the ‘rostrae’.
