Votive Stupa, Nalanda Download Full Size Image

Nalanda was a revered center of learning and one of the oldest universities in the world. It was located in Magadha, modern day Bihar, India, and it was operational between c. 300-1200 CE. Students from Tibet, China, Central Asia, and Korea. This image shows a part of a votive stupa depicting Buddha in various meditative postures. Most of the stupas and pillars like this were once covered with gold patina, the remnants of which are vaguely discernible now.
